Flinders: Solar and BYD Battery
A homeowner in Flinders, on the Mornington Peninsula, wanted to remove and recycle their old 1.5kW solar system and upgrade to a more powerful and efficient setup. With the property surrounded by beautiful trees and nature, careful system design was crucial to ensure maximum sunlight exposure and cost-effectiveness. Read on to see how our Sunpower Solar and BYD Battery system were installed in Flinders.
Overview
Initially we were contacted to perform a system check, as their existing solar system was no longer working properly. Upon inspection, we found that the issue was a failed inverter. We provided two options: replacing the inverter or upgrading to a new solar and battery system. While replacing the inverter was possible, their 15-year-old system was too small to meet their current energy needs. As homes become more electrified, older systems often struggle to keep up with increased consumption so we went for a whole new system with a BYD Battery and Fronius Inverter.

Key Challenges
The main challenge was optimising panel placement to work around the shaded environment. We designed the layout to capture the best sunlight throughout the day, making sure the investment would deliver strong returns.
To upgrade the home’s energy system, Dunton Group installed:
-
24 x 440W SunPower P7 Series Solar Panels – High-efficiency panels with a sleek black design and a 30-year product & performance warranty.
-
1 x 8kW Fronius Gen24 PLUS Primo Inverter – A reliable, efficient inverter with a 5+5 year warranty.
-
5 x BYD Battery Box Premium HVM (13.8kW total storage) – Ensuring energy independence and greater self-consumption.
-
Fronius Smart Meter – For real-time energy monitoring and optimisation.
-
Black Clenergy Rooftop Mounting System – Securely mounted to the tin roof.
-
Full System Setup, Monitoring, Testing, and Commissioning.
The Results
Over its lifetime, the system is projected to save the homeowner approximately $52,884 in electricity costs.
This 10.56kW solar system is estimated to generate 12,179kWh of solar power annually, leading to an estimated electricity bill saving of $2,395 per year. Given that the high feed-in tariffs of the past, like the 60-cent rate, are no longer available, the client opted for a new system with a BYD battery to store excess energy for later use rather than exporting it back to the grid. This solution maximised their energy independence and future-proofed their home.
With a self-consumption rate of 60%, the homeowner can use most of their solar energy directly, while exporting the remaining 40% to the grid. After accounting for utility bill offsets, the estimated net savings for the homeowner is $21,885, making this upgrade a cost-effective and sustainable investment.
There were a few hot days out in Flinders, so a big thanks to the homeowner for keeping the team going with cold water and snacks—it made all the difference! We also took the opportunity to upgrade the switchboard, making it cleaner, safer, and better suited to handle the additional power from the new solar and battery system.
This upgrade has given the homeowner a powerful, efficient, and future-proofed solar and battery system. With significant bill savings and a sustainable energy solution, they can enjoy energy independence while making the most of their stunning natural surroundings.
