Dromana: Solar System

It’s not every day you get to work on a project for a business you’re at every single day! The awesome people at Little Rebel are a local institution and we’re fortunate to be able to get to drink their amazing coffee on a daily basis.

Overview

Little Rebel are a specialty coffee roaster here in Dromana. They wanted to make their production more sustainable by offsetting their energy usage with solar panels.
Our Little Rebel solar installation involved 45 solar panels spread across their factory roof. The installation had to be large to produce enough solar power that they could rely on it during the operation and coffee roasting hours. They did not need a battery at this point because they are only open during the day. We are fortunate to have such an institution around the corner from our office. We might’ve installed their solar panels, but Little Rebel keeps our energy providing us with our daily coffee.

Key Challenges

Little Rebel are a coffee roastery down here in Dromana. They consume a lot of power throughout the day during their cafe opening hours and roasting our favourite coffee beans.

Luckily, Little Rebel has a large roof surface that we utilised as best we can to make sure they can cover their energy consumption throughout the day.

  • 45 SunPower P3 Solar Panels: SunPower panels have always been leading the way in the solar industry. The panels are backed by a 25-year warranty.
  • Fronius Inverter: A Fronius Symo Inverter and a Fronius Smart Meter has increased capabilities allowing Little Rebel to monitor and track their energy usage – which they display on a TV in the cafe so showcase their moves towards sustainability.

At peak production times the solar system produces more energy then the property can consume. The additional energy produced is sold back to the grid with estimated earnings of $1,259 p.a.

Little Rebel’s solar system installation has helped them to to reduce over 48 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

Since the installation of the solar system this property is now using 51% self consumed energy. This is a huge saving for Little Rebel as they have such a high energy consumption during their opening and roasting hours.

The solar installation includes access to Solar Web, enabling easy access to monitor the daily production and performance of the solar system.

The photovoltaic output can be monitored online, providing a simple way to track the electricity being produced from the energy of the sun. An additional benefit of tracking your energy usage is the ability to see if your solar system is performing as expected, catching any potential problems or issues with production immediately.
